NEWS:    VW Recalls 2003 Audi A4 and A6

ConsumerAffairs.org -- August 29, 2007 -- Volkswagen of American is recalling 34,358 of the 2003 model year Audi A4 and Audi A6 sedans equipped with 1.8 liter turbo, 1.8 liter V6 or 3.0 liter engines.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the fuel pump in these vehicles can fail cutting off the fuel supply and resulting in the engine stalling.

NHTSA warns the engine stall could “present a potential risk of crash.”

Audi dealers will install a new fuel pump free of charge. The recall will begin September 28, 2007. Owners may contact Volkswagen of American at 1-800-222-8987 or Audi at 1-800-822-2834

APRIL 2008 -- Volkswagen is recalling 68,240 MY 2001-2004 Audi A6 Quattro vehicles equipped with 2.7L, 2.8L, or 3.0L engines and MY 2001-2005 Audi Allroad Quattro vehicles equipped with 2.7L or 4.2L engines. The aging of the plastic material in the fuel tank rollover valve combined with bending stress from the aluminum ventilation line to the rollover valve nipple may lead to cracking of the nipple. If this happens, a fuel leak may result. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source could lead to a vehicle fire. Dealers will reinforce the nipple on the rollover valve to prevent leakage or repair the cracking at the nipple. The recall is expected to begin on or before May 30, 2008. Owners may contact Audi at 1-800-822-2834. This recall was the subject of a Preliminary Evaluation, PE08-008, conducted by the Office of Defects Investigation. 08V-157

August 2007 -- VW is recalling 34,358 MY 2003 Passat and Audi A4 and A6 vehicles equipped with 1.8L turbo, 2.8L V6, or 3.0L engines. A change in the electrical motor components in the fuel pump can lead to an inoperative fuel pump and, ultimately, stoppage of fuel supply to the engine causing it to stall. If fuel flow to the engine is interrupted, the vehicle could stall without warning and thus present a potential risk of crash. Dealers will install new fuel pumps. The recall is expected to begin during September 20007. This recall is a supplement to a previous campaign (please see 06V017). 07V-375

JULY 2007 -- Volkswagen is recalling 1,021 MY 2006 A6 passenger vehicles. The automatic rear lid includes an electric motor and clutch that work in conjunction with two gas struts to open and close the rear lid, including a manual close function. In rare cases if one of the struts has a total loss of pressure, the resultant slow movement of the rear lid is interpreted by the software as an intended manual close and the motor clutch releases to close the rear lid immediately. This can result in an unintended rapid closing of the rear lid with a risk of personal injury. Dealers will install new software. The recall is expected to begin during September 2007. 07V334

NEWS:   Audi A6 Headlight Switch Recalled Again

ConsumerAffairs.org -- June 12, 2006 -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is recalling four types of the Audi A6 from the 1998 to the 2000 model years because a previous recall to fix the head light switch may have been improperly performed.

NHTSA is concerned that the improper installation could lead to an electrical short and fire under the dashboard on the driver's side of the car.

On some Audi A6, A6 Avant, S6 and S6 Avant cars, while attempting the remedial repair for recall 0413000 a plastic cover may not have been securely installed by the Audi technician.

If the cover is not properly installed to the driver's side support crossmember, the headlight switch wiring harness could contact the crossmember and cause an electrical short.

Audi has not provided a remedy or an owner notification schedule but owners may contact the manufacturer at 1-800-822-2834 or call NHTSA 1-888-327-4236.
